Project description:
To fund the construction and running of a cross-generation community center, which would address the community's needs and generate income. The community's needs will be addressed in two buildings.
The first building will be used:
- in the morning, to accommodate a seniors' club (for 150 seniors) and a nursery school (for 200 grandchildren)
- in the afternoon, to host an after-school program (for 150 children)
- in the evening, to address community needs (adult education courses, legal aid services, literacy programs, study hall, etc.).
-
The second building, a factory, will provide:
- employment to seniors and parents of the children attending the nursery school (among others)
- funding (by allocating a percentage of the profit) to cover the community center's running costs
The community center will stimulate the Township economy by employing Township community builders (to build the center), and by creating a factory.

Project Justification:
The Ikamva Labantu/Abadala program has purchased a plot of land in Nyanga to start a pilot project: building a cross-generation community center. Seniors are often left alone to perform household chores and care for the children. Meanwhile, their families use their pension for support. As a result, they are often isolated, abused, overburdened, and unable to provide the proper child care required of them. To address these issues, the Nyanga seniors joined forces with Ikamva Labantu to create a cross- generation community center. The center would provide seniors with:
- Services (meals, medical check-ups, rehabilitation and recreation programs, exercise, counseling and a day care center to free them from child caring duties)
- Training (competent seniors are trained to provide home care services and meals to bedridden community members)
