Fund the upgrading of a Day-Care Facility for Disabled Children

Project description:
To purchase land for the Belhar Disabled Children's Center ( which will serve 80 children). The Provincial Government Reconstruction and Development Program (RDP) has secured funding for the future landowner (the Belhar community) to erect the building.
Project Justification:
Belhar is located on the outskirts of Cape Town. Originally established as a dormitory suburb for people who had been forcibly removed from Cape Town (under the group areas act), Belhar has no social infrastructures or community facilities. The poverty level requires both parents to work, making day care for disabled children a necessity. Since the demand for day care outweighs the availability, many parents are forced to leave their children in precarious and unsafe conditions. To address this fundamental need, the community has responded by creating a home day care. A disabled children center director operates from her one-bedroom house, a day care center caring for 40 disabled children. Adequate day care centers for disabled children are needed to respond to the overwhelming demand. The Belhar Disabled Children's Center will consult to health professionals who will monitor and treat the children.
Project Costs:
$ 3,000 (covering land cost and purchase fee)
